Who We Are

About Thrive

Dr. Tom Newman

Dr. Tom Newman is the clinical director at THRIVE Cognitive Therapy working with the team at the Centre for Pediatric Excellence.

Following his undergraduate work at Redeemer University, Dr. Newman earned his M.A. and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Lakehead University, in Thunder Bay, ON.  An avid athlete, Dr. Newman conducted his graduate research for both his M.A., and Ph.D., examining the anxiety-reducing effects of physical activity. He completed clinical practicums at the Hamilton Anxiety Treatment and Research Centre and the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. He has also completed training at the Ellis Institute for Cognitive Behavioural Therapy in New York. Since moving to Ottawa in 2012, he has built on his education and work experience with the team at the Ottawa Centre for Cognitive Therapy.

Dr. Newman’s therapeutic style is characterized by an accepting, caring and optimistic environment. His style is straightforward, rational, and infused with a healthy dose of humour.

Dr. Newman currently lives in rural Ottawa, and when not helping people work towards Thriving, he can be found spending time with his wife in the garden, playing with his four (yes four!) kids, or pursuing his passion for Ultimate Frisbee.

“My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.”
